Buying a used car on Long Island: a simple three-step guide

A good car purchase starts with your needs and a clear total. Take one step at a time, and keep your choices until you are ready to move forward.

1. Find the car that fits your everyday life

Think about who rides with you, your usual trip, parking space and the features you will use. A first car, a family SUV and a daily commuter can have very different priorities. Start with the Vehicle Finder or browse inventory. Save the cars you like, then compare seating, mileage, drivetrain and price side by side. Saving a car does not commit you to a purchase.

2. Look at the full purchase price

Review the vehicle price, tax, title, registration and the disclosed $175 documentation fee. Ask for an itemized total before agreeing to buy. If you choose optional protection or other products, ask for their individual cash price and terms. A dealer certification badge describes our own program; it is separate from an automaker certified pre-owned program. Check the exact vehicle documents for the benefits that apply.

When comparing financing, consider the amount financed, APR, loan term and total of payments alongside the monthly payment. A longer term can lower a payment while increasing the total paid. The payment tools are estimates; lender approval and the final agreement determine actual terms. Optional products should be a choice you understand.

3. Choose a next step you are comfortable with

Open a saved car to start a purchase request, or request a test drive first. Create your account to keep the vehicle and your details together and access available CARFAX reports. A test-drive request becomes an appointment after the team confirms the vehicle and time. You can also ask questions before completing a credit application.
