Buying from out of state and shipping the car home? We issue a temporary in-transit permit so your vehicle is legal to transport, then you finish the registration in your own state.

What to bring

- Valid driver's license or state-issued photo ID for every name going on the registration
- Proof of New York auto insurance — an ID card or binder with the vehicle, or your insurance agent's number so we can verify on the spot
- Plates you want to transfer from your current vehicle, if you have them
- Your current registration, if you're transferring plates from another car
- Payment for the state's sales tax, title, and registration fees (we'll quote the exact amount before you sign)
- If you're financing, nothing extra — your lender paperwork is already handled here
